Housing Discrimination problems
No Black, No Handicapped, No gay - Where can they live?
Lee, Haesoo

When a tenant makes an agreement to purchase a house, the house owner can request their cooperation by their preference : "No pet", "No, noise", which is the tenant can compromise. However, it shouldn't happen to segregate because of their unchangeable conditions. In other words, no one should suffer unequal treatment in housing decisions based on a protected characteristic such as race, sex, religion, color or disability.

According to HUD research, gay discrimination in the housing market is a major problem, and as many as one in five transgender individuals are homeless because of housing discrimination. Even though 'Equal Housing Opportunity' is mentioned by the law, many people have problems looking for houses where they can live.

What I want to say is not we have to love every one. We are not perfect, and ideal people. All of us have kinds of prejudice. It is a negative feeling against a person because of their race, religion, or background. If a house owner doesn't like Mexican Americans in general, the owner is prejudiced. If the owner feels prejudiced, this is not a problem. However, the problem is caused when the owner refuses to sell to someone because of that prejudice.

Besides the housing problems, minority groups are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. We have been taught that all groups are entitled to have rights, protections, benefits without distinction. This housing unequal treatment is a part of inciting discrimination in our society. It is not different from apartheid or ghetto neighborhoods.  Housing is a fundamental need and right for everyone, including a huge segment of our population.
