A Snack Society : It's all customized just to you.

 A decade ago, We used to expect every country would have the similar cultures. People are moving from one country to another, The trade restrictions are reducing, Business activities are starting to be more and more global as many firms broaden their operations into overseas markets. We can see McDonald´s everywhere, as well many people have the same cell phone. Life styles, languages and customs have been spread all due to globalization. It is no longer about 'my country and me', It was now more like, 'the world and us'.

Globalization -> Localization

   Against the expectations, Globalization is changing to Localization, Many multinational companies are consider of characteristic in their  target area. Wal-Mart, which is the second large foreign company failed in the Korean market because they didn't know Korean's trend and taste. In Korea, there have been many huge discount stores. Koreans like looking around the stores, enjoying sample of food. In other hands, Wal-Mart which looks like just store shelves is convenience to buy, but it makes Korean consumers feel bored. It shows how important local analysis is to expand global market. The company had to identify Korean consumer's own behavior through market surveys.

Wal-mart's Failure in Korea :

Wal-Mart is a typical example of a global giant who has failed to localize its operations in South Korea.

Localization -> Customization.

   No longer are modern people satisfied with localization. They want their own products, own style and own tastes which can distinguish from others.  They don't seem to want the mass products; They prefer hand made coffee than Starbucks' one. When they drink a coffee, they are not looking for a coffee. They are looking for their coffee, the coffee they like, the taste they like. It means consumers are really looking to have their personal tastes reflect in all things they are doing and using. Experts say it as 'IKEA effect' because IKEA furniture is not finished product, we can assemble them according to our preference. Also, lt can be described as a snack. Everybody snacks on little bits of things, little bit of data, little bic of information and it's all customized just to each individual taste.

Consumers are really looking to have their personal tastes reflect in all things they are doing and using.

The Changes Of Marketing Strategy.  

   Increasing various consumer demand, multinational companies have changed marketing strategy. Starbucks have been particularly adept at creating products that let consumers alter them to their own tastes. Apple (I-Phone) offers users various application, and we can choose what our interest is. Products, foods, the media have been dramatically altered as a result of customization. It is high time to listen what consumers want.

Internet Access Power and 'Libya revolution'

   Currently, the major issue in the world is 'Libya revolution'. Many people already know how the revolution happened. Simply put, it is one of the Jasmine revolution ; The arab people have been awaken to their social and political rights after decades of repression under dictatorship by Moummar gadhafi. The contagious effect of pro-democracy fever was so powerful. It makes Libya jump into unrest in a just week. The this revolution is caused by not religious people but young ordinary people, that was also surprising to me.

New method for social changes 'the Internet' 

   Decade ago, many people sacrificed, struggled, and died for social change. However, We choose various method for social changes today: gathering signatures, nationwide boycott on the Internet and so on. The Internet access contributed to Libya Revolution too.
 
   I focused on the revolution process to gather rebels and spread their aspirations toward liberty. At the beginning, rebels wrote about the dictator and government of corruption on their twitter. They started gathering people and the people scraped the information. The protester have still announced what happened in Libya, how cruel government attack is. They notify their tactic too.

   As we can see in this case, protest method has totally changed. Many experts said the effects of these popular revolutions have affected Internet access. 'Youtube' traffic from Libya has fallen 90% from normal levels. Finally, Libya government blocks the access like Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs.

Also, China and North Korea have been filtering in the Jasmine Revolution. It shows how much the internet effects on the people in Libya. Spreading information and idea is to help public realize what we change in our society, moreover, protesters’ expressions and tactics have increased and diversified by using the technology.

   The other reason I focused on the Internet access in this issue, Korean workers who stayed in Libya were rescued, using Twitter. They tried to escape from chaos of Libya, but they didn't have immigration form. One of the worker asked for Korean embassy to help them though Twitter. His twitter comment was spread quickly, and then, Korean government rescued them.

Libya seems similar to the 1979 situation in Korea, we used to oppose violence to violence. 
However, today, nonviolence is more effective to express our message. 

   Unfortunately, Libyans could not avoid violent struggle. At least 200 peoples are killed in clash protesters and the government. It is similar to Korean 1987 pro-democracy protest. Many Koreans died that time, however we got our social right and freedom. Nowadays, Korean protest tend to choose non-violent way like candle light, silence protest, especially free expression in the internet. Therefore, I am sure Libya is also going to spread peaceful protest after they build a democratic society. Actually, Libyans already showed the practicality as I mentioned above. I hope the protesters can have their right and freedom.

I worked harder.. I didn't want to hear that I slacked off, thinking it was the last month to work there. I left the office as if I would come tomorrow. Only then did my students give me letters, I realized it was my last day at Hana. They promised me to keep studying hard and send me e-mail in English.

Who can explain how grateful I am to Hana?

Before working for Hanarepublic Institute, I had a low levels of self-esteem, usually say "No can do".

During working there, I learned how to capture people's heart and communicate with them, especially, my students.
Happiness to work and meet precious people could withstand mental and physical exhaustion. I always moved by my students' improvement. I think my students as more than people whom I teach foreign language. I hope that they will break their limit of English. They can do, they will do!

하나리퍼블릭어학원에서 마지막 수업을 마치고 돌아오는 길. 학생들에게 어떻게 인사를 해야할지, 오늘이 내 마지막 영어수업이었다는 것이 실감나지 않아 어설픈 인사를 나누었다. 표현에 이리 약한 나는 아니었는데, 못내 아쉽고 학생들에게 미안해 이렇게 나마 글을 정리해 적어본다.

하나리퍼블릭 화요일 여섯시 학생들, 여름에 이 학생들을 처음 날이 여전히 생생하다.

다른 학원 분위기와는 사뭇다른 ;; 하나리퍼블릭 건물 덕에 문을 열고 빼꼼히 고개를 내밀던 두 여학생. 그냥 지나가다 들렀다며 나와 상담을 했는데 - 그로부터 2주 후 내 반에 앉아있는게 아닌가? 유난히 쑥스러움을 많이 타던 둘은, 나중엔 보강까지 꼬박꼬박 챙기며 나와 재미있게 영어회화 공부를 했다.

마지막 날, 나는 영어 영작을 시험으로 내는데 - 그 이유는 평소 영어말하기 습관이 글에도 반영된다고 생각하기 때문이다. 

잘못된 습관 (예를 들어 be동사를 빼먹는다든지, 연음에서 s (스-) 소리를 자꾸만 붙이게 된다든지, article 를 붙이지 않는다든지) 이 입에 붙으면 영작문을 할 때에도 be동사가 필요하든가 아닌가 헷갈리게 되고, article (관사) 는 자꾸만 누락시키는 상황이 벌어지게 된다. 

학생들이 "선생님 여기엔 a 가 붙는거예요? 이 동사 다음엔 to부정사가 와요? -ing가 와요?" 물으면 내가 입으로 우선 중얼중얼 해보는 이유도 그렇다. 내가 많이 말해본 것, 입에 익숙한 것들을 더듬어 보는 것이다.  

나의 마지막 수업, 영어회화수업이지만 테스트는 영작으로 ^^ 아.. He, She... verb 에 s 어디갔어요...

평소에 입에 붙이는 습관을 들이면 쓰다가 '아.. 뭔가 허전한데' 이 느낌이 들텐데 말이죠.

어설펐던 내 마지막 인사가 마음에 걸려 내 마음을 글로 적어 문자를 보냈다. 그리고 학생들의 답장.. 난 행운아다...

They give me encouragement, I am greatly emboldened, thinking the time when I see how much they improve.

grammar 보다는 structure, nuance 를!

Soo 영어수업을 들은 하나리퍼블릭학생들은 내가 늘~ 문법이 아닌 어감 어감 어감! 구조 구조 를 강조했던 것을 알거다...

나도 중*고등학교 시절엔

to부정사를 목적어로 취하는 동사 : want, hope, wish, decide,

ing 동명사를 목적어로 취하는 동사 : enjoy, finish, give up, deny

to 부정사와 동명사를 목적어로 취하며 의미가 달라지는 동사

remember (forget ) + to  부정사 : 할 것을 기억하다 (잊다) 미래의 일

이렇게 공부했다. 달달 외우고 선생님께서 뭐가 나오면 무조건 -ing, 독해하느랴 시간 잡아먹지 말라했다. 물론 이 방법이 전적으로 잘 못된건 아니고, 영어는 어휘를 많이 아는 만큼 풍부하게 말할 수 있으므로 매우 외우는 것도 중요하지만, 사실 to, -ing 가 왜 오는가는 암기가 아닌, 어감에 달려있다. 실제로 내가 캐나다에서 공부했던 ELS 책에는

'infinitive(to부정사)' : Something has not happened yet ;  to부정사가 아직 일어나지 않은 일, 아직 하지 않은 것들/ 미래적 어감을 가지고 있다는 것을 이해한다면, remember toV 는 앞으로 해야할 행동을 기억하는 것임을 알 수 있다. I remebered to do homwork. 나는 숙제를 해야할 것을 기억했다. ("아! 나 숙제해야하는데!" 라는 느낌) 

'gerund(동명사)' : Something happened in the past, or have happend ; 쉽게 말해 동명사가 과거에 해왔던 것들/ 과거적 어감을 가지고 있다는 것을 이해한다면, remember -ing 는 과거에 했던 행동을 기억하는 것임을 알 수 있다. I remebered doing homwork. 나는 (내가) 숙제 했던 것을 기억했다. 이미 숙제를 했고, 그것을 기억해낸 것.

이런 어감을 안다면 want, hope, decide 가 왜 to부정사를 가지고 오는지 암기 하지 않아도 이해할 수 있다. 사람들은 내가 앞으로 해야할 것을 결심하고, 이러나지 않은 일들을 바라고, 원하지 - 이미 했던 것을 결심하진 않는다. 미래적 어감이라고 내가 말하는 이유도 마찬가지이며, 이와 비슷한 단어가 나온다 하더라도 비록 그것이 to부정사를 취하는 동사로 외운적이 없다하더라도 to 를 고를 수 있을 것이다.

반대로 finish, give up 을 보면 해오던 것을 끝내고, 과거 해오던 것을 포기하는 어감이 맞는 것이지 아직 일어나지 않은 행동을 끝내고 포기할 순 없는거다. 따라서 과거적 어감을 가지고 있는 동명사를 취하는 동사가 된다.

(사실 다 아는 이야기일거라 생각합니다. 영어를 남들보다 조금은 더 깊게 공부 했을 사람들이라면 알 법한 내용을 이렇게 장황하게 적는 제가 미약해 보이네요.... 다만 왜 제가 수능공부를 할 땐 선생님들이 알려주시지 않으셨을까요? 생각을 줄이고, 답을 신속하게 맞혀야하는 것이 관건이기때문에 이해하는 것을 지양하는 것일까요? 이렇게 영어를 공부하면 더 재미있었을텐데요...)

한국 포털사이트에 to부정사 만 쳐도 연관검색어에 "to부정사를 목적으로 취하는 동사" 라고 나온다. 마치 한 단어인듯 사람들은 그 문장을 외우고 있는 듯 보인다.

이처럼 나는 어감을 몸으로 습득하라 강조하고, 난 용어를 설명하면서 수학공식처럼 영어를 공부하는 것에 굉장히 회의적이지만 (적어도 영어회화를 공부하고자 한다면), 지금은 많이 달라졌다하더라도 현재 성인들이 받았던 한국 영어교육이 문법 위주의 수업이 그러하니... 나도 문법적 용어에 공부할 필요가 있다는 것을 느낀다. 하루는 하나학생이 '사역동사' '준사역동사' '목적격보어' 에 대해 물어보는데... "준사역동사가 뭐예요?" 라고 물어보고 있는 나.... 문법적으로 체계적으로 분석하면 학생들이 나보다 훨씬 잘 설명할 때가 많다.

마지막으로, 하나리퍼블릭 영어회화학원에서 만난 인연들 

하나리퍼블릭어학원에서 내가 가장 크게 얻은 것은 소중한 인연들. 작년 10월부터 올해 8월까지 함께했던 학생들, 선생님들. 한중일 정모와 영어정모를 진행하면서 만난 외국친구들.... 나에게 좋은 에너지를 준 사람들이다. 하나리퍼블릭에서 일본어를 가르쳤던 사야카, 정모에 늘 참여해 일을 도와주던 우리 야카야카사야카가 !!! 지난여름. 드디어 연세대 한국어어학당을 졸업했다. 사진을 찍어주지 못해 아쉬웠는데 이렇게 곱게 한복을 입은 야카 사진을 보니.. 내가 얼마나 뿌듯하던지! 사야카가 어학당 졸업 시험을 위해서 열심히 공부하는 모습이 떠올랐다. 지금은 일본으로 귀국했지만, 가까운 나라인만큼 우린 또 언제든지 만날 수 있을 거다. 사야카 졸업 축하해!

또 잊을 수 없는 나의 학생들과 하나리퍼블릭 학생들! 지난 8월에는 하나리퍼블릭 영어회화학원 신촌, 강남점 동창회가 열렸다. 하나 선생님들 모두 학생들을 초대해 테이블에 앉아 이야기를 나누었지만, 난 이번 동창회에는 내 학생들을 부르지 않았다.. 그때 당시만해도 내가 마지막 달이라는 것을 실감하고 싶지 않아서였는데, 사진을 찍으면서 학생들과 재미있게 대화나누는 선생님들을 보니 내 학생들이 그립고 마음이 허전했다.... 흑. 중간중간에 내 수업을 듣고, 이젠 다른 레벨수업을 듣고 있는 학생들도 보이는 구려...

선생님들과 학생들 모두 즐겁다 ^^ 

회상해 보건대 물론 작년 캐나다에서 돌아온 직후 하나리퍼블릭에서 일하면서 내 생활은 쭉 바쁘고 고달플 때도 많았지만 이번 달을 기점으로 힘든게 힘들지가 않았던 것 같다.  삶을 진지하고도 치열하게 살아야한다는 것에는 이견이 없다. 일과 학업... 인간관계 역시 언제나 어려운 거고, 그렇기 때문에 언제나 성실해야 한다고 생각한다. 그러나 일에 대한 애착에 비해 그것을 감당할 수 없는 체력... 욕심이 과해서 내가 날 놓아주지 못하고 묶기만 하는 일이 자주 답답했다. 

오랜 고민끝에, 8월을 마지막으로 하나리퍼블릭에서의 '티쳐 쑤' 생활을 잠시 쉬기로 했다. 9월은 내게 또 다른 터닝포인트가 될 거다. 남들 시선에 휘둘리지는 말자는 생각, 너무 잘하려고 스스로를 괴롭히는 것도 적당히... 내 안에 귀를 기울이고 나의 마음의 소리를 따르는 시간들을 보내야지. ^^ 그러나 영어회화 처방전 블로깅은 계속된다! 영어울렁증을 가진 사람들이 영어를 즐길 때까지~ 쭉!
